Day 2–an easy 11 hour drive from Golden to Merritt…

It should only take under 5 hours. We stopped. A LOT!

The Motel in Golden was a little underwhelming. I would stay there again if I was alone on the road, but for my family I’ll probably choose the Ramada next time. This place is located away from most things in town, near a trailer park and pretty much nothing else. The room is very very clean with room for everyone, but I dunno, you sort of set a standard for yourself, and this just fell short. I won’t name the place, as it is pretty popular and the family that runs it are super nice folks.

After a quick breakfast at Tim’s we were on the road. We didn’t worry too much about breaks for a while as we were rested and enjoying the scenery. Andrew settled in to a movie so we just carried on. The roads were very busy all day and we spent most stints lined up in a convoy as far as we could see.

As we headed up to Rogers Pass we enjoyed some snow sheds (tunnels to the boy). For these he shut his movie off and watched intently as we made our way though a couple clicks of these.

As we approached the Summit we decided it was time for a stretch, and washroom break as the coffee had done it’s job by now. There is a sign in front of the Glacier National Park building to bring your National Park pass inside, and once inside it is your free pass to peruse the Rogers Pass museum. I’ll tell you what, the National Parks do an incredible job of interpreting their lands. This little museum was filled with incredible displays and interactive stations that educated us on many parts of the pass. It was beautiful in there too! Andrew found some fun kids areas too! If you have been past here and never stopped, make sure you do next time.

Once we left there, it’s a 56km downhill stretch into Revelstoke. We took 2 hours to get there. Why would it take so long?

this.

IMG_0903_2_4_Localtone

There are 3 places we stopped to enjoy these boardwalks. The first was Hemlock Grove, the next was Giant Cedars and the last was Skunk Cabbage. My favorite was the Cedars. This place smelled like the best smell I had ever smelled. I can’t describe it. It must be like what it would feel like to live inside an oxygen tank! IT was an assault on all my senses and I found myself breathing as deep as possible to get every ounce of this place into my body. sooooooo amazing.

IMG_0936_5_7_LocaltoneIMG_0945_4_LocaltoneIMG_0960IMG_0966IMG_0983IMG_1012IMG_1015

Can you smell it?

Skunk Cabbage Boardwalk didn’t have the same appeal for me but we did see some pretty neat stuff. Like this 6” long Slug.

IMG_1036

The Skunk Cabbage was HUGE. These leaves were a couple feet long!
IMG_1051IMG_1067

The plants were worth the 1.5km walk alone!
IMG_1071IMG_1079

I started to play with some of the amazing textures here.
IMG_1103IMG_1110IMG_1113

And now you can spell Skunk Cabbage in French.

From there we dropped down into Revelstoke. With no real agenda, we followed the signs to the Farmers Market and the Train Museum! The Train Museum is small, but incredibly well layed out! We enjoyed a full 45 minutes there exploring the open cars and locomotives. Neat stuff! Andrew loves trains, so this was a highlight for him for sure.

IMG_1165IMG_1178IMG_1192IMG_1199

At the Farmers Market down the street from the museum, we hung around, ate some smokies and watched a coal train shunt back and forth all while generally enjoying this gorgeous day.

IMG_1130IMG_1137

We left Revelstoke with a failed attempt to get a Tim’s coffee (sooo busy) and headed for Salmon Arm. It was getting to be the heat of the day and we didn’t want to miss out on a swim today. We bypasses some pretty cool tourist places as we will visit on the return trip in a few days.

Canoe beach was pretty empty. I was pleasantly surprised! Andrew had a blast in the warm Shuswap Lake, and after a 1/2 hour we figured we better keep trucking. Merritt is still 2 hours away straight driving time.

IMG_1203IMG_1213

This tunnel is under the railway tracks to get to the beach from the parking lot.
IMG_1222

Not too much else to say. We stopped for a visit with an Uncle in Kamloops, and grabbed a slurpee for the rest of the trip to Merritt. I’ll tell you about the Hotel tomorrow, but for now, just know it’s way more comfortable than the last!

So until tomorrow, where I will be chatting with you from Beautiful Vancouver… Goodnight!

Day 1–just the right distance.

I got off work at 11:30, headed straight for the bank as my replacement credit card had finally arrived. The bank screwed up enough getting the card here that they gave us a $50.00 gift card to one of our favorite restaurants, The KEG,  in return for the trouble. We will be enjoying a wonderful dinner in Victoria in a week or so, courtesy the Bank! Cool! I then headed down to Vistek Cameras to pick up my rental lenses, headed home from there and within a half hour we were on the road!

WootWOOT and another WooT!! Finally, Vacation! This has been a long time coming for us and is probably my dream type for trip. It sort of looks like this.

  1. Driving somewhere.
  2. Daylight travelling only
  3. seeing new things
  4. hotels every night (as opposed to camping)
  5. near water
  6. with my family
  7. shooting many, many photos

Yep, that’s a good one for me.

We left Calgary after having a tasty Subway sandwich and headed west along the Trans-Canada highway. It was very VERY busy heading out of town. It thinned out a little after we got past Banff, but for the most part it was quite crowded. I’m old enough now I don’t feel the need to rush when I drive, so I set the cruise a little over the limit and sit back and let the other drivers stress out.

IMG_0360

We stopped quickly in Dead Man’s Flats to top the cooler up with ice, and just kept heading through Banff park. We spend much time in this area and just wanted to get to new ground and start exploring. I couldn’t resist stopping for a quick shot of Castle Mountain at the Junction though.

IMG_0399

Our first real break was shortly after Lake Louise for a leg stretch and to see if we were on time for the Spiral Tunnels. The spiral tunnels are cool in that a train goes into the mountain, completes a 270 degree loop and comes out of the mountain overtop of itself. This happens twice in this area so the trains can make the steep grade up and over the continental divide. It’s still incredible steep for a full on freight train and you can hear the big diesels from a long way off as they approach. We were right on time!

IMG_0443

This guy was sitting below us watching the train too! Anyone know what it is? It’s about the size of a pound of butter. So not a mouse I don’t think.
IMG_0428

From there it’s just a couple Km’s to Field (We are now in British Columbia). Field is now the Yoho National Park headquarters, but back in the day, and still to some degree it’s a switching off point for locomotives and crews for the railway. It’s a little tourist trap, but charming with some really incredible views! (We didn’t take the time to explore the artisan scene here, but I hear it’s incredible)

IMG_0478IMG_0508IMG_0543

So. We are now only 56kms from Golden, our first stop for the night. We have only been travelling for 3 hours including stops, I guess we should go check out Emerald Lake. We have never been up there as the rooms at the highly rated lodge are too expensive for our income bracket, but the general public are welcome to come up and enjoy the lake. You can dine in the restaurant and shop in the gift shop or rent a canoe whether you are staying there or not. We escaped with all our money and some pretty amazing shots. This lake color is absolutely true. I wish it had been sunny out to get the true colors, but this was still pretty impressive. (Full Disclosure: I would LOVE to stay here and the price is more than worth it if you can swing it, which we will one day, it`s simply stunning up here)

I don’t know these people
IMG_0684

Oh yeah, prior to heading up to the lake we happened across ‘Natural Bridge’. Whelp, we better check this out.

Worth it.

Such coolness. The river carved a hole in the rock. simple, awe inspiring. gorgeous.

So we got to Golden at 7ish, got a bite to eat at this really cool little diner called Legendz, the food was wonderful and satisfying. It’s early evening now and Andrew and Traci are sound asleep. I’ll update our lodgings each day after we leave. Want to keep the crazy’s from finding us. The funny story of the night was when the waitress came over and wiped Andrew's messy seat (he spilled syrup on the seat), and then had her wipe his leg off too as it was sticky. funny guy. She got a good tip.

Well, that is Day 1, kind of the unwind, de-stress bonus day (still a workday, but on the road vacationing). We are looking forward to starting tomorrows day fresh and ready for adventure. Lot’s to see and do between here and Merritt. It’s about 5 hours driving time, but we plan to do it in 12. how’s that for efficient!

Oh. Little bit of construction (a total of about 25kms) on the trip. All between Lake Louise and Field. We just don’t care. No real agenda, just a great relaxing trip!

Griswald-esque road trip

Now, if I can only get you all stuck with the song ‘Holiday Road’ in your head, we will all be on the same wavelength.

We are off tomorrow on our big roadtrip! Woot! I’ve never had an ALL hotel Canadian vacation before. It’s always involved camping in the past. Should be cool. Wi-Fi and hot showers every night. Woot Woot! This blog will be the dumping grounds for all our misadventures and photographs for the next 11ish days.

Oh, speaking of photographs, I started my Photography page on Facebook. This fall we will have canvases and prints for sale, so if there is anything you have seen of mine that you’d like for your home or office, just let me know. Here are a couple recent favorite photos I took on one of our photowalks. These 4 shots were all taken within a 15 minute span one evening.
